Today, the world is facing a global energy crisis due to a rise in population, industrialization and investment in infrastructure. It is imperative to find alternative and sustainable sources of energy such as solar energy, before the situation get worse. The government in the MENAT region is taking special initiatives to develop renewable energy and so are various private entities such as Abdul Latif Jameel.
Today, the world is facing energy crisis with the ever increasing demand but the supply is not matching up to it. This phenomenon is especially noticed in the MENAT region where the energy demand is set to grow by 7% annually till 2020. A boom in population, rapid industrialization and heavy investment on infrastructure are the main reasons for this hike in consumption. Hence, it is imperative to tap into alternative and renewable energy sources such as solar energy to maintain equilibrium between supply and demand as well as to conserve the non renewable sources of energy. The government is also taking initiatives to help this situation and has started many key projects to conserve energy and also to tap into different sources of energy so that the consumption of fossil fuel reserves can be minimized. Many private organizations have also included energy conservation and development of sustainable in their corporate social responsibility. Abdul Latif Jameel- A Visionary in Renewable Energy Abdul Latif Jameel is one such conglomerate that plays a significant role in this endeavour of saving energy and developing alternate sources of energy. It has always laid great emphasis on environmental and social responsibility and prioritized energy efficiency and reduction in consumption of finite resources. With this aim in mind it has partnered with energy experts and used its own financial acumen and operational strength to develop sustainable energy. It plans to indulge in energy audits, retrofitting, and remote monitoring to cut down on energy and water consumption of both public and private buildings. Photovoltaic solar energy- A Good Start! Abdul Latif Jameel has initiated its efforts in this direction with photovoltaic solar energy and has acquired Fotowatio Renewable Ventures (FRV), a leading international developer of large-scale solar projects for the same. They will use their local knowledge and financial capability and blend it with FRV’s extensive knowledge and experience in engineering, development and construction of solar installations to explore photovoltaic solar opportunities within the MENAT region. Abdul Latif Jameel aims to create job opportunities also via this project that will include training localities to create renewable energy expertise in Saudi Arabia. Alternate Resources Abdul Latif Jameel is also looking at more partnerships and investments to tap into more renewable energy sources like wind, waste-to-energy, concentrated solar power (CSP), combined cycle and hydropower generation. They also plan to evaluate and invest in other resource needs such as water and would later include desalination and waste management in their business sectors.
