The answer often lies in something you may be doing wrong. If not, it is time to seek professional help.
It is true what they say about the eyes being the window to one’s soul. Not only do your eyes reveal what you are thinking, they also unwittingly tell the world many of your secrets. Your eyes tell the world your age. If you haven’t been sleeping well, or if you spend your entire day staring at a computer screen, your eyes are certainly going to gossip about you. How do they do this? Tired, stressed eyes develop dark circles around the eyes, instantly making you look exhausted. Your skin and hair may be in excellent health, you may have got a new haircut and you may sport the latest threads – but your dark circles will be the only thing that get people’s attention. Remedy the dark circles under your eyes with this simple five-step programme: 1 Detach from the digital. Staring at a computer or mobile phone screen all day puts tremendous pressure on your eyes. The eyes themselves become dry, while the skin around it begins to get stretched. Take yourself off the digital medium for at least one hour before sleeping. This includes the use of mobile phone, computer, television and e-book devices. 2 Sleep well. Lack of good quality sleep is often the main reason for dark circles around the eyes. Lack of sleep fatigues the eyes, while you may harm the delicate under-eye skin by rubbing your eyes every time you are sleepy. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time daily, and ensure that your sleeping space is free of noise. 3. Cool it. Often, discolouration in the eye area is a result of excess heat build-up brought on by fatigue and lack of sleep. Hence, cooling the area with cold water compresses or cold milk often helps remove the heat. The skin is stressed further when the blood vessels in the area constrict under strain, thus causing dark circles under the eyes. You can even place slices of cucumber over the eyes to keep dark circles away. 4. Stimulate the eyes. As mentioned earlier, stressed under-eye skin results in blood vessels in the area constricting further. Reduced blood circulation results in dark circles. Stimulate the delicate under-eye area by gently prodding it with your little finger all around the eyes. Also, you can gently rotate your knuckle over your eyeballs to relax your eyes. 5. Revamp your diet. Lacklustre eyes are often a result of poor hydration of the body, and hence, the skin. Dry skin develops dark circles quicker. Increase your hydration levels by drinking at least one litre of water every day. Tank up on fresh vegetable juice, eat water-rich fruit and have two cups of green tea every day.
